Green Date-Nut Smoothies

March 11, 2016 By Patricia 58 Comments

I was inspired to make these delicious Green Date-Nut Smoothies at home after having spent $7 and a good 20-minute wait on a similar one made at the newest juice bar in my neighborhood. Ugh! I was not a happy camper after that experience!

Not just pretty, but good for you and tasty, too, Green Date-Nut Smoothies are easy to make!

My husband and I had recently set off to Starbucks for a break from our home office (one of the small treats for work-from-homies like us). There’s a new juice bar next to this particular Starbucks and for some reason, as we headed in to our temporary office, I decided to grab a juice instead of coffee.

I had plenty of time to pick my ingredients as I waited in line for 10 minutes (and I waited another 10 to get my finished product, which they had to take back because they forgot to add spinach).

Homemade smoothies are the best! These Green Date-Nut Smoothies taste amazing!

Well. You get the idea. Yeah, I should have had coffee instead! So on our way back home I decided we needed to pick up some dates and spinach so I could recreate a version of that pricey (and not all that flavorful – talk about insult to injury) smoothie. Enter Green Date-Nut Smoothies – one of my new, homemade favorites!

One reason I love this smoothie is the combo of sweet dates with spicy cinnamon. It’s a really good pairing, and of course there’s the super-fabulous spinach included, too. And there is no way anyone can say, “this tastes like grass” after having a sip. Because it doesn’t! It might look like it, but it doesn’t taste like it!

Use pitted dates, starting with three or four if they’re on the big side. If you need to sweeten things up, or your dates are small, add a few more. I also strained the mixture after blending it because, as I discovered the first time, pitted dates still leave behind a few hard pieces. This smoothie is dairy-free (I use almond milk), vegan, and gluten-free (pick the appropriate almond butter for you).

It's easy to make tasty, healthy smoothies at home, like these Green Date-Nut Smoothies!

I’ve been whipping up Green Date-Nut Smoothies a lot lately. They’re way better than the juice bar version I had, they only take a few minutes to make, and they are super tasty – and green, my favorite color!

Ingredients

  • 3 cups (packed) fresh spinach leaves
  • 4-6 pitted dates (depending on size)
  • 1 cup unsweetened almond milk
  • 2 tablespoons almond butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1 cup ice

Instructions

  1. Add 4 dates and the remaining ingredients to a blender.
  2. Blend until smooth. Taste, and add more dates if you’d like the smoothie to be a bit sweeter.
  3. Strain the mixture using a fine mesh strainer, and discard the remains.
  4. Serve cold.

Notes

Start by adding 3 or 4 dates to the mixture. You can add a few more if you'd like it on the sweeter side.

Looks absolutely delicious, I cannot bring self to pay so much money for a sub-standard juice/smoothie outside too! I love green smoothies too and always make my own. The trick to blend dates well is just soak them in almond milk (or any liquid you are using) for 30 mins before you make your smoothie and it will not leave behind any chunks :) xx, Kusum | www.sveeteskapes.com
