Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies

December 11, 2020 By Patricia 114 Comments

Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies are so flavorful and festive this time of year! If you’re baking up a storm this season add these Italian favorites to your list.

Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies are a lovely treat for the holidays!

It’s the time of year when cookies are near – like, within arms reach! It’s so hard to resist all of them (so I don’t), especially these Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies.

This is not a new recipe on my site, but it’s definitely a favorite! I love sharing this around the holidays!

Have you ever had or made pizzelle cookies? Pizzelle are traditional Italian waffle cookies that you make with an iron that’s similar to a waffle maker. The pattern portion of a pizzelle iron is just much thinner than that of a waffle maker, and the cookies come of crispy and light.

Pile the cookies high! Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies are fabulous for the season!

Another tasty traditional-with-a-twist cookie you’ll love is my Pumpkin and Walnut Rugelach Cookies. They’re so delicate and tasty!

These cookies are popular at Christmastime – and at any other celebration, really. It wouldn’t be Christmas in my home without them! I made Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies this year to keep with tradition.

Try my Linzer Cookies with Homemade Orange Marmalade, too! They dress up any cookie tray!

You'll find Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies go well with a cup of hot coffee!

Looking back to when I was a kid, I always thought these cookies were difficult to make. I think the reason I thought that was because my mom would always make such a huuuuuge batch of them, and it seemed to take all day to make them.

In fact, there’s no way for her to make just a few dozen without altering her recipe significantly. So she doesn’t!

Really, these cookies are incredibly easy to make, and I think they’re perfect for winter holidays because they look like giant snowflakes — so pretty. They make such a nice presentation on the cookie platter, too. Don’t forget to add my Chocolate-Chili Thumbprint Cookies with Dulce de Leche, too!

A classic Italian cookie that's easy to make and flavorful, too: Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies!

Honestly, when I was a kid, these weren’t my favorite cookies. I mean, how could they compete with frosted cutout cookies, or cookies dunked in chocolate?

The beauty in these pizzelles is their simplicity. My mom usually flavors hers with anise, and my brother sometimes makes chocolate pizzelles, and this year, we have this festive version with orange and amaretto flavors. These pizzelles are amazing with a piping hot cup of coffee or tea.

A pretty stack for your holiday cookie platter: Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies!

I hope you try these Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies, and appreciate their simplicity. Enjoy the season!

Nothing beats tradition! Orange-Amaretto Pizzelle Cookies are a wonderful holiday treat!

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 6 tablespoons melted butter, at room temperature
  • 2 tablespoons amaretto liqueur
  • 1 tablespoon orange zest
  • 1/2 teaspoon orange extract
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/8 teaspoon salt
  • Nonstick cooking spray
  • Powdered sugar for dusting

Instructions

  1. Add the eggs and sugar to a large bowl and beat to combine. Whisk in the butter, a little at a time. Add the liqueur, orange zest, and extract. Mix well and set aside.
  2. Add the flour, baking powder, and salt to a bowl, and whisk to combine.
  3. A little at a time, add the dry mixture to the wet mixture. Use a wooden spoon to mix thoroughly.
  4. Heat the pizzelle iron and lightly spritz it with the nonstick cooking spray.
  5. Add about 1 tablespoon of the batter to the center of the patterned part of the iron. Bake according to the maker’s instructions, about 30-40 seconds, or until lightly golden.
  6. Remove and place on a baking rack to cool. Continue until all the batter is used.
  7. Dust the cookies with a bit of powdered sugar before serving.

Hmmm...I'm not sure a waffle iron would suffice -- it's a bit deep (the pizzelle maker is more shallow). You could try? Or maybe add some batter to form a circular shape onto a parchment-lined baking sheet, and pop it in the oven? It wouldn't have the pattern, but the flavor would be there! Let me know if you give this a try! Thanks, Stacey!

Hmmm, well, I think if the batter is thinner, they would be crispier. Maybe thin it with a bit of OJ (since these are orange flavored), and/or a touch of water? I'm not sure this is a fix, though. Let me know if you try them and if it does work!

I married into an Italian family and pizzelles are always on the cookie table. This is only my second attempt and I loved the flavor! I may add a little more amaretto next time because I couldn't really taste it. As hard as I try, mine never look like yours! The batter was quite thick and sticky...is that right or should I have added another egg...mine were on the small size. How DO you get that perfect shape? Thanks so much for sharing the recipe...it's going to be my go-to. :) Merry Christmas!

Hi Jennifer! Yes, we Italians always seem to have these for a special occasion - I love them! Gosh, I'm not sure what to say about the batter. Mine is somewhat thick, but it seemed to work out okay for me. Maybe you could make the recipe, divide the batter and try adding some liquid like oj to one batch? Don't hold me to that, but it's a though? Thanks so much for stopping by! Hope you had a lovely Christmas & New Year!

Disappointed in these. The almond flavor didn't come through at all, and they are way too sweet. I could taste just a hint of orange. Next time I would use the zest of a whole orange and add 1/2 tsp orange extract and 1/2 teaspoon almond extract. Would probably cut the sugar back by a third.

Sorry to hear this, Susy! I'm not sure what to say - they're always flavorful when I've made them. Perhaps up the amount of Amaretto/zest/extract? I don't think you should add too much Amaretto due to the liquid in the recipe. I hope you'll give these another try!

Have you used orange essential oil in place of orange extract? I know I would use less oil than extract but have never used it in baking before. I have a 4 oz bottle and would love to give it a try. I have been making Pizzelles for years but many people don't care for anise and I have tried chocolate and nutmeg Pizzelles, but not happy with them.

I haven't used orange essential oil, Jacqueline. Unfortunately, I wouldn't know how to make that work! I hope you try this recipe and enjoy!
