Cantaloupe-Mint Caipirinha Cocktails

June 19, 2014 By Patricia 30 Comments

If you’re watching the summer games, join in with a toast from home! This recipe for Cantaloupe-Mint Caipirinha Cocktails is a fun, not-quite-classic version of the national cocktail of Brazil.

Caipirinha Cocktails

Will you be tuning in to watch the games in Rio? To help set the mood and get in the spirit, my husband and I have been mixing up Caipirinha (pronounced kai-pee-REEN-yuh) cocktails. They’re perfect for the summer months!

To be honest, I wasn’t sure I would like this drink, but I think I’m hooked. If you ask me, this drink deserves a medal! Cantaloupe-Mint Caipirinha Cocktails have a fresh, slightly sweet flavor that includes a hint of tart lime.

Caiprinha is made with cachaça (pronounced ka-SHAH-suh), a distilled liquor made from sugarcane (but don’t confuse it with rum). Cachaça has been made in Brazil since the 1500s, so let me sound it out for you: it’s time you give this drink a try!

Our Cantaloupe-Mint Caipirinha Cocktails take a little liberty with the simple original. I’ve been reading up on Caipirinhas, and apparently adding fresh fruit like berries or melon is fairly common, too.

Caipirinha cocktails

I like the original recipe, but adding cantaloupe and mint gave these drinks a nice blush color, not to mention a punch of flavor and texture. Most recipes for Caipirinhas call for muddling the lime. Go for it if you need to relieve some stress (and enjoy a little pulp). I simply juiced my limes.

Cantaloupe-Mint Caipirinha Cocktails are perfect to enjoy during the warm weather, and they’re wildly appropriate to drink during the summer games!

Cantaloupe- Mint Caipirinha Cocktails
Serves 2

INGREDIENTS

  • 2 limes, juiced
  • 4 ounces cachaça
  • 4 ounces simple syrup (2 parts water to 1 part sugar, heated until dissolved, then cooled)
  • 1-1/2 cups cubed cantaloupe
  • 6 fresh mint leaves
  • Ice

INSTRUCTIONS

  1. Fill two, 8-ounce cocktail glasses with ice.
  2. Add the cantaloupe and mint to a food processor. Blend until smooth.
  3. Add the mixture into a cocktail shaker along with the lime juice, cachaça, and simple syrup.
  4. Add the lid, hold it in place tightly, and shake several times. Pour the liquid into the glasses.
  5. Garnish with extra lime and cantaloupe, and serve.

What a beautiful looking drink! Love your summer fresh photo sequence too. I've never had cachaça (are you rooting for Brazil as well?) My son plays competitive soccer but won't watch the World Cup (go figure) so I'm not getting all the scoop ;-) he says playing is far more fun than watching :)

Thanks so much, Kelly! I didn't think I'd like cachaca, but I've been enjoying it - nice surprise trying new things! How cool that your son plays competitively! We're rooting for US, Italy, and of course the host team, Brazil :)
